Chapter One — Your Move
Mateo met Rhys at a charity auction where they bid against each other for a painting neither of them particularly liked.
By the time the price became embarrassing, the rest of the room had stopped watching the auctioneer. Rhys lifted his paddle with a lazy turn of the wrist. Mateo answered before the number had finished leaving the stage.
“You can let me win,” Rhys murmured without looking at him.
“You could try earning it.”
Rhys won the painting. Mateo won his phone number, written across the back of the lot card with a note beneath it: One drink. Neutral ground. No assumptions.
Three nights later they occupied opposite ends of a quiet rooftop bar. Mateo arrived with questions. Rhys arrived with a coin.
“Absolutely not,” Mateo said when Rhys set it between them.
“You haven’t heard the rules.”
“If a coin decides, there aren’t rules. There’s luck.”
Rhys leaned forward. “It doesn’t decide who leads. It decides who has to ask.”
That was different, and they both knew it. Control could be taken cheaply. Asking for it required exposure.
They spent an hour negotiating a scene they might never play: limits stated without apology, signals chosen for clarity, aftercare discussed with the gravity of travel plans. The coin remained untouched between their glasses.
At closing time, Rhys finally covered it with his palm. “Your move.”
Mateo could have reached for the coin. Instead, he met Rhys’s eyes and asked the question directly.
The surprise on Rhys’s face lasted less than a second. The respect that followed lasted much longer.
