Chapter One — Terms

Elias had designed museums, hotels, and one house that seemed to float above the Pacific. None of them made him as nervous as the unmarked black door on Mercer Street.

He checked the address once, then the folded card in his coat pocket. PRIVATE APPOINTMENTS. ASK FOR ADRIAN. Underneath, in handwriting he recognized as his own, he had added three words: listen before deciding.

The man who opened the door was older than Elias by perhaps six years, broad through the shoulders, dressed in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled precisely twice. A slim leather cuff circled one wrist. He did not smile immediately, which Elias appreciated.

“You’re early,” Adrian said. His voice was quiet enough that Elias had to step closer. “That usually means eager or afraid.”

“Prepared.”

Now Adrian smiled. “That was going to be my third option.”

The room beyond him looked less like a club than a private library after midnight: dark wood, green-shaded lamps, clean leather, no music loud enough to hide behind. Adrian led him to a table where two glasses of water waited beside a blank sheet of paper.

“Nothing happens tonight that we haven’t named first,” Adrian said. “You tell me what you want. I tell you what I’m willing to give. Either of us can change our mind.”

Elias sat. The chair was low enough that Adrian remained in his line of sight without looming. It felt intentional. Everything in the room felt intentional.

He unfolded the list he had rewritten four times. Adrian read it without touching it. No teasing. No performance. When he reached the final line, he placed one finger beside the words and looked up.

“You wrote that you want to surrender control,” he said. “But every condition on this page is a way of keeping it.”

Heat climbed Elias’s neck. “Is that a problem?”

“No.” Adrian pushed the paper back across the table. “It means the first thing I want from you is honesty, not obedience.”

Outside, a train moved beneath the street and made the water tremble in both glasses. Elias looked at the blank space below his list. Then he picked up the pen.
